Big juicy red/green heads hold their sweet flavor even in extreme heat. A Southern heirloom from at least the 19th century--nobody knows just how far back this lettuce goes. In 1977, 90-year-old Chloe Lowry gave it to the Seed Saver's Exchange. She had got it from her grandfather, George Admire, who was a Civil War veteran. Often called a butterhead because of its rose-like shape and sweet flavor, but its size, crispness, and heat resistance make it more likely a crisphead/Batavian type. Whatever, this is a winner for summer salads and market production. Grown by Golden Rule Garden.
