Italian Red Torpedo Onion, Rossa di Tropea
A favorite, I'm so pleased to have found seed for this special fresh summer onion. Easy to grow, easy to slice, beautiful rosy color, and great sweet-tangy flavor. Another plus is that these grow above the ground, so are helpful if you have rocks, heavy soil, gopher problems, and so on. Widely-adapted intermediate to long-day type can grow almost anywhere in the US. Superlative for salads and sandwiches--I can remember my parents waiting for these to come into season. When they finally appeared in local markets, we would have a barbecue and eat them on hamburgers. These days, chefs are grilling the onions themselves, as well as braising them. Known as "Italy's Red Queen," this onion has a festival in its honor in Calabria, near Italy's southern tip. Read more here.
