Sisters Garden Kit
The staffs of life in America for over a thousand years, corn, beans, and squash were called the Three Sisters. Sunflower was often the fourth sister.
Our Sisters Collection gives you the corn, beans, and squash in two versions--one set for fresh eating, and one for winter storage, with sunflowers for edible seeds and pollination. Plus, how-to planting plans. 7 packets at a discount.
Contains seeds for: sweet corn, green beans, zucchini, cornmeal (polenta) corn, dry beans, winter squash, and sunflowers.
They were grown together in such a way that each created good conditions for the others. The corn created a trellis or pole for the beans to grow on. The beans have colonies of beneficial bacteria on their roots that are able to suck nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil to prevent nutrient depletion. The corn secretes sugars from its roots that nourish these bacteria. The squash shades the soil providing perfect conditions for the beans and corn to grow. Depending on climate, they were combined in various ways. We describe three of the most common Native American planting plans in our info sheet.
