Heirlooms and Their Stories Seed Collection
Seeds for 6 local heirloom vegetables that have been passed on by seed-savers in my area. This is not the usual heirloom assortment with well-known and widely grown heirlooms like Brandywine Tomato (which I love, but you can get it lots of places.) These are seeds from among my offerings that I got from local seed-savers, not from seed companies. Some are probably not terribly old, some probably are. All have been grown and saved in Northern California and are quite rare.
Of the six varieties, two are now being sold by one medium-size seed company. The other four were part of Bountiful Gardens's collections and are not being sold by anyone outside Mendocino County, as far as I know. For very rare seeds, like the Brazilian Beauty Tomato, the packets are smaller than normal.
Several of these are entwined with my life, for example the Mill Creek Onions. I found a box of these onions at the local farmer's market after the couple who bred them had died. Nobody was carrying on saving the seed. I bought the box and took it to Ellen Bartholomew at Golden Rule Garden, who has been stewarding the variety for several years now.
