Madras Edible Pod Radish
Back for 2022! A cherished heirloom that has disappeared from the American market. Madras is a radish grown for its juicy pods--like snow or snap peas, except that there are hundreds on the plant at a time, and it likes hot weather. If you like sugar snap peas as a fresh snack, you'll probably like these. Milder and juicier than rat's tail and other podding radishes--I don't know why these are still such a secret, but I believe we are the only place to get them. Eaten in Germany as a snack with beer. Eaten stir-fried or steamed in Asia. Eaten pickled in various places (like dilly beans) Eaten raw in the garden as a crunchy treat. Keep them picked to keep more coming. Because we are letting them flower and go to seed, these plants are much bigger than a root radish. BIG plants grow to 3 or 4 feet, and are bushy.--a high-yielding and substantial plant. Flowers are pink and pods form continuously, so this is a good plant for near your patio, path, house, or sitting area. Instant salad--and a great conversation-starter. 30 seeds
I have to say that regular radishes aren't a favorite food of mine, especially when the fast-growing salad turnips are so much sweeter and just as easy to grow. SO, a radish has to be super-special for me to carry it. This radish is super-special and truly unique. Plus, it loves hot weather! Photo by Laughing Duck Gardens.
