(Plantago coronopus) Erba stella means "star grass" in Italian, and gives you an idea of what this plant looks like in the garden. A lovely little salad green that is a real survivor, hardy to zone 5. Crunchy and succulent, with a mild nutty flavor, it is a natural for salads. Grows wild on seaside cliffs, and is a dependably hardy salad green for winter and early spring. Often used for winter hoop house and cold frame production, as it doesn't mind cool humid conditions, is disease-resistant, and doesn't take up much space. Best quality before flowering.
