Mill Creek Red Onion
The best-storing, most bolt-resistant red onion we have found, this is also an heirloom with a story. Bred by local nursery owners Joe and Wanda Turi, the variety would have vanished except that I happened to see a box of them for sale at the farmer's market and ask the vendor what variety they were. He replied that they were the last of the Turis' special onion, since they had recently died. I bought all the vendor had, and took them to Ellen Bartholomew at Golden Rule Garden. She grew them to seed, and has stewarded this variety for several years, saving this heirloom from extinction. Mill Creek was the name of the Turis' nursery.
Since then, they have done well in USDA trials, with local gardeners, and in gardens as far afield as New Zealand!. Does equally well planted either spring or fall. Intermediate day-length; a Stockton Red type. Note that these are pale as seedlings and in the center, so young plants will not appear very red at transplant. Our seed grown by Golden Rule Garden. 150 seeds
