Summer Salad Collection
Salads can be a challenge to grow in hot weather--which is just when you want to eat them. Here are 3 heat and bolt-resistant lettuces, as well as a salad herb and an accent green. Lettuce is normally adapted to spring conditions, but farmers over the years have selected some types for bolt-resistance and non-bitter flavor in hot weather. Those are the kinds I have sought out for this collection. 5 packets of seed in a larger envelope.
Be aware that storing lettuce seed above 80 degrees will often make it go dormant and be hard to sprout. I recommend storing your lettuce seed packets in a tight jar in the refrigerator. For best germination, sow in pots or trays in a cool place--indoors, or in shade. Then gradually get seedlings used to garden conditions before planting out into the sun. Lettuce will taste best in summer if you give some shade, either with shadecloth or by planting where there is morning sun but afternoon shade--on the east side of your corn patch, for example.
