Green Globe Artichoke
A semi-hardy perennial that can live 5 years or more, given good drainage and protection from extreme cold. A delicacy with a distinctive, delicious flavor. The edible parts are the flower buds, which form the second year. These are picked at full size and steamed for eating the tender centers, or picked very young and eaten whole. Green Globe is an heirloom that has been grown in the US for almost 200 years. Each 4' plant produces 3-5 large globular buds. Overwinters without protection in zones 7 and above. I have seen these overwinter in zone 5 with mulch and row covers. Generally planted in spring for harvest the next year in late spring. However, it is possible to have flowers the first year by starting very early in a warm place and then transplanting outside while the weather is cold, so the plant thinks it has gone through winter and is starting a new growing season. Highest in antioxidants of any vegetable, and reputed to have many medicinal effects, such as improving liver, circulatory, and digestive health, lowering blood pressure, etc. 30 seeds
