Russian Hunger Gap Kale
This hard-to-find heirloom kale great season-stretcher for home garden or market. Red Russian type with broader leaves, lighter red coloring and more jagged leaf edge. Very hardy and extremely rare. Possibly the most vigorous napus kale, it looks very healthy all winter, then bolts weeks later than other kales. This gives you two opportunities for spring crops--the leaves formed as weather starts to warm in spring, and the sweet tender flowering shoots that make a wonderful vegetable during the "hunger gap" before the new crops are ready. Recommended by Carol Deppe in her wonderful book The Resilient Gardener which has lots of great strategies to keep homegrown food on the table through many situations, from being laid up with a bad back to earthquake with loss of water and power. We recommend both the book and the kale highly. Rare. 80 seeds
