Strawberry Spinach "Faster"
Heat-resistant summer greens with juicy red "berries" along the stalk. The leaves are small but abundant, and produce well all summer with no bitterness. The arrowhead-shaped leaves have a spinach-like flavor--not surprising, since the plant is related to spinach, lambs-quarters, and quinoa. The mulberry-like fruits are good in salad or added to other fruit. They are sweet but don't have the tartness that gives most berries their zing. The plant has been used since ancient times, but never became a farm standard (It doesn't make a single, salable harvest.) so it retained a lot of wild characteristics. Farmer/breeder frank Morton has taken an interest in the plant and selected it for faster and more uniform germination in vegetable gardens. His new "Faster" strain is an OSSI-pledged open source variety. Grown by Frank and Karen Morton at Shoulder to Shoulder Farm. 200 seeds
