Rue
The beautiful blue-green leaves of Rue were the inspiration for the "clubs" in the deck of cards. Long used at the entrance to homes and gardens to ward off disease and bring prosperity, earning it the name "Herb of Grace." Rue is a beautiful landscape plant that always looks good and makes a perfect background for flowers. Known for repelling flies, fleas, and other pests. (Since the plague was spread by fleas, it's use as a protection from plague has a sound basis.) A low shrub native to the Mediterranean, with bright yellow flowers for a long period. The seed pods look like little oranges. Like the club symbol that is modeled on it, Rue is supposed to bring protection from evil eye and demons. In modern usage, it is stimulant, antispasmodic, and emmenagogue. Can make skin sensitive to sunlight--wash hands after contact. Should not be used by pregnant women. Prefers full sun, regular garden soil. Sow in spring. Standard greenhouse culture or sow in a fine seedbed outdoors. Sow just below surface, tamp securely, keep evenly moist and in the light. 50 seeds
