Resilient Garden Collection
Independent plant breeder Carol Deppe has devoted her life to breeding varieties that taste wonderful and are absolutely dependable. Her book The Resilient Gardener shows how small-scale gardens can provide not just salads and side dishes, but a complete diet. She has remained independent of corporate, and academic institutions, pursuing her vision of "open source crops for organic systems, superior flavor, agricultural resilience, and human survival for the next thousand years." All of the seeds in this collection were grown by Carol, and all but one were bred by her as well.
This collection includes five crops total. Four are staple crop varieties bred by Carol: Magic Manna Flour Corn( for breads, biscuits, cookies, gravies, and cakes); Cascade Ruby-Gold Flint Corn (for polenta, cornmeal, and johnnycake cornbreads); Bush-Beef Black Resilient Beans; and Bigger, Better Butternut Squash. The fifth variety is Gronninger Kale, a Dutch Heirloom that works perfectly in Carol's "eat-all" cropping system. Carol is the only US grower in the US producing seed for this valuable kale, and she considers it an important addition to the home survival garden. Together, they are a great start towards a well-rounded home-grown food supply. (All of these are also available individually in larger sizes.)
