Palla Rossa Chicory (Radicchio)
A beautiful heirloom chicory from Northern Italy. More uniform than most other open-pollinated types, and easier to grow from spring plantings than the others. For fall/winter eating, plant in summer (July/August) and plan on harvesting a 3-4" head in November or so. Depending on conditions, the head can be loose or tight. Give it about 12" between plants. Like other greens, the flavor is milder after frost, and also can be made milder by soaking in ice water.
