Bred by Carol Deppe, and Nate France to be sweeter than other delicatas, with a smaller seed cavity that gives more flesh per squash. These are fantastic, with a very sweet rich flavor that's reminiscent of dates. Once you've grown this, you'll want to have it every year. Long-keeping for a delicata, so you can eat them longer into the winter. Carol's book The Tao of Vegetable Gardening tells the story of how she and Nate France bred this squash, with mishaps and strokes of luck along the way. Tan with green stripes, rather than the usual pale yellow. Pledged as an OSSI open-source variety.
The Open Source Seed Initiative exists so that breeders who originate new varieties can protect them from exploitation and patenting by corporations. It means that the breeder has freely given up her patent rights in order to keep the variety in the public domain forever. The OSSI pledge reads: "You have the freedom to use these OSSI-pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others' use of these seeds or their derivatives, by patents or other means, and to include this pledge in any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives."
