This delicious, crisp, juicy melon is famous for its keeping ability, storing easily into the winter; hence the name. I fell in love with the flavor at a tasting this fall. Heirloom from the 1800's also called "Ice Cream Melon." This strain has been a local treat in Humboldt County, CA for decades. I talked to one man who had driven the farm truck to bring these melons to market. "People would get so excited when we showed up," he said. "It was like a party."
The peachy-rose flesh is very juicy, fragrant, and sweet. The outside is an unusual silvery green that stands out from the foliage for easy picking. Melons are quite round and generally about volleyball size, so they fit in the fridge. Watermelons are ripe when the tendril nearest the fruit shrivels. For storage, pick slightly underripe. 20 seeds
