This heirloom Tibetan barley was brought from Tibet in 1929 and saved in the USDA seed bank until rediscovered recently. Gaining a following among farmers and foodies both, due to its wonderful toasty flavor, its healthy growth and good yields. The heads are awned, and the grains are a beautiful brown-purple which denotes the presence of health-enhancing anthocyanins. The small plants, bred for Tibet's short growing season, top out at 2 feet, and are able to make a crop quickly in dry or marginal conditions.
