Burmese Okra
I was so pleased to find this ultra-early and delicious variety. Direct-sown after the soil is warm, it will start bearing pods in about 50 days--the same time it takes to grow a head of lettuce! This variety is also less mucilaginous than other okra, with outstanding mild flavor. The plants are small and manageable--about 3 feet tall--and support themselves. They adapt well to containers, and are very decorative, with pale yellow hibiscus-like flowers. Okra is a great summer crop: fast-growing, with few requirements, and lots of uses, from gumbo to dried chips. The trick in western and northern gardens is to find a short-season variety that is not hindered by our cool nights. Note that the photos show our seed crop, so the pods are longer than is ideal for the kitchen. In dry climates, harvest them at 4" for the tenderest pods. 40 seeds
