Dry Bean: Beefy Resilient Grex
This bean is a modern legend. Bred by Carol Deppe to be a dependable food source under stressful conditions of all sorts. It was the only bean in my garden to survive drought and boron-laden water. It is equally resilient in cold or wet conditions. Carol crossed the very early, high-yielding Gaucho bean with the drought-resistant Black Mitla, and purposely left a lot of variation in plant size and bean color in order to provide the widest possible genetic diversity for adaptation to local conditions. You can read more about it in her excellent book The Resilient Gardener. This was one of our original selections when we started Quail Seeds, and we are so glad to have it back. Open Source Seed Initiative pledged variety, grown by Carol Deppe herself.
