California Sungold Cherry Tomato
Great sweet/tart/fruity flavor, easy to grow, resistant to cracking, and early--what more could you ask? California Sungold is the outcome of a grassroots collaboration that included organic farmers and gardeners throughout the state. I love the result and I think you will too. Compared to the proprietary hybrid "Sungold", vines are more compact (but bear til frost,) and fruit is slightly larger and much more resistant to cracking and spoilage. Note: This variety seems to need heat to perform at its best. In cooler or coastal areas, Honeydrop might be a better choice in this category.
For years, professional growers and home gardeners alike have been trying to de-hybidize the popular Sungold, which is a proprietary hybrid. (Only the corporation that owns the rights to Sungolds know its parentage.) Steve Peters and Kanti Rawal took a completely different, open-source approach. Drawing on their decades of work in organic plant breeding, they made new crosses and distributed seeds widely to organic growers all over California. Each year, seeds from the tastiest and most productive plants were saved. This collaborative effort has achieved success. Flavor, ease of cultivation, compact size, keeping qualities, and yield are all excellent. 20 seeds
