Low-growing perennial with edible leaves and flowers. Native to England, it is common in lawns in the US. In hot summer areas like mine, it thrives in moist soil or shade, and is a great choice under shrubs or as a lawn substitute under trees. In more temperate regions or on the coast, it will do well in full sun. The leaves are fleshy and can be picked for salads; the flowers are edible and borne in great numbers. Hardy in zones 3 to 9, this is one perennial edible that does well in areas with severe winters. Thrives in the same conditions as two other diminutive but hardy edibles: miner's lettuce and mache. A mixed planting under shrubs or in dappled shade such as fruit trees would be a great perennial/self-sowing planting. 100 seeds
