Crimson Sweet Watermelon
This is the best-flavored watermelon I know of--juicy, sweet, with a richness of flavor that others can't equal. It is also the easiest to grow of the watermelons I've tried, thanks to its vigorous, healthy growth and deep roots. A unique feature of this variety is its ability to promote beneficial soil fungi that inhibit fusarium wilt--how cool is that? Its foliage is resistant to disease as well. Seeds are smaller and fewer than other heirloom watermelons.
The vines of this medium-size variety are more vigorous and able to hold their own in the garden better than smaller types, with a big, resilient root system that even gophers didn't conquer in my garden this year. We're carrying the super-disease-resistant Virginia Select Strain selected over many years by Pam Dawling and introduced by the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Debbie Piesen and Alexis Ziegler at Living Energy Farm are stewarding this variety and produced our seed. As the folks at Southern Exposure say, Crimson Sweet is "the variety many melon lovers come back to after trying the rest!" Medium-sized, nearly-round melons average 10"x 12" and are ready in about 85 days. 30 seeds
