With all the sizes, shapes, and colors of tomato that have come out recently, I never would have thought that an open-pollinated, traditionally-bred cherry tomato could surprise me this much. But trust Steve Peters and Kanti Rawal, creators of California Sungold to do just that. Their amazing grassroots collaborative tomato-breeding project has produced Magic Bullet, and the name describes it well.Indeterminate


Imagine bullet-shaped grape tomatoes (firm, very sweet, with a burst of juice inside) that start out with striped in deep blue-purple and white stripes, then move through pink, green, and finally orange. Psychedelic colors, unique pointed shape, firm crack-free texture for snacking or basket sales, very sweet non-acid flavor, and disease-free vines that continue to ripen fruit even after light frosts--it is almost like a new vegetable. A mid-to-late season treat that keeps going after all the others have quit.

The Open Source Seed Initiative exists so that breeders who originate new varieties can protect them from exploitation and patenting by corporations. It means that the breeder has freely given up their patent rights in order to keep the variety in the public domain forever. The OSSI pledge reads: "You have the freedom to use these OSSI-pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others' use of these seeds or their derivatives, by patents or other means, and to include this pledge in any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives."
