Zeb Romaine Lettuce
A tall, dense-heading romaine with terrific heat resistance, yield, flavor, and crunch. Frank Morton has dozens of great varieties to his credit, many with playful colors, spots, stripes, and shapes. (Hyper Red Rumpled Waved, Lava Lamp, and Mayan Jaguar are a few of his lettuces.) This one is pure green, and pure juicy, sweet, crunchy romaine. And because the time when you most want those juicy crunchy salads is during hot weather, it's got plenty of heat-and-bolt-resistance as well.
Small, "gem" lettuces are all the rage right now with restaurants, but I think most home gardeners want more lettuce per square foot, and more juicy heart, rather than mini-heads that look good on a restaurant plate but are all outer leaves. Zeb is my choice to replace Jericho, with the same bolt resistance in a tastier, and much more vigorous, form. An OSSI-pledged open-source variety. Lactuca sativa 300 seeds
The Open Source Seed Initiative exists so that breeders who originate new varieties can protect them from exploitation and patenting by corporations. It means that the breeder has freely given up patent rights in order to keep the variety in the public domain forever. The OSSI pledge reads: "You have the freedom to use these OSSI-pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others' use of these seeds or their derivatives, by patents or other means, and to include this pledge in any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives."
