Pennyroyal
One of the best herbal groundcovers--fragrant, low-growing, and dense, with beautiful shiny green leaves and spikes of purple flowers. A mat-forming member of the mint family with a refreshing scent and both culinary and medicinal uses. Called Puleggio in Italy, where it gives a distinctive flavor to tomato saucesm poultry and other white meat such as frog legs and rabbit. Uses by herbalists for upset stomach, headache, delayed menses, and other ailments. The commercial essential oil should never be used or ingested--another reason to grow and use the plant itself. Pennyroyal should be avoided in pregnancy.
Pennyroyal is at home in seasonal wetlands such as riverbanks and meadows that flood in winter. It has proved invasive in native vernal pools and other sensitive environments. Should not be allowed to set seed where native wetland species may be affected. Mentha pulegium 50 seeds
