Rue
Ancient herb with medicinal and ceremonial uses going back centuries. The Club in a pack of cards is based on the leaves of Rue. It is reputed to repel flies and other pests. It is used in folk medicine from Europe and Asia to Mexico for topical pain relief, delayed menses, and other problems. Used in small quantities in liqueurs. Widely adapted, Rue is native to the dry Mediterranean but is used a lot as an ornamental in English gardens, where the cool climate and moisture doesn't faze it at all. A unique ornamental with distinctive blue-green leaves, Rue makes a good-looking pest-repelling understory for larger plants like roses and fruit trees. Deer-proof, and avoided by gophers, I like to use Rue along with Wormwood and Yarrow as a protective border around more vulnerable plants.
Should be avoided in pregnancy. Can cause skin inflammation. Essential oil or strong tea should not be ingested.
