Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Overwintering broccoli with flavor far superior to the large-headed "supermarket" type. Not to mention the gorgeous color. (turns green when fully cooked.) The original type of broccoli; it overwinters to make delicious sprouts over a long period in late winter. Planted in late summer, it makes a huge plant with lots of growth tips, each one of which produces lots of purple broccolini a bit at a time. You get lots of meals instead of a big glut you have to freeze. Why haven't you seen this in the store? The labor for harvesting over and over is not economical for farms. Perfect for the home garden or small-scale grower.
There's a catch: you have to have a mild enough winter that the plants don't freeze out. Zone 7 and up are usually where it is grown. (Can be grown anywhere with enough winter protection.)
