We are so pleased to bring you this high-quality open-pollinated broccoli. Solstice is tender, sweet, and early--ready by the summer solstice from a late March sowing. Outstanding as a fall broccoli with the long necks holding it up away from slugs and mud. It is generally 2 weeks earlier than main-crop broccoli. The heads are held up clear of the foliage, making them easy to pick and safer from slugs and other pests. Many side shoots after main head is cut. Farmer Jonathan Spero bred Solstice and has pledged it to the Open Source Seed Initiative so it cannot be patented. A must for the spring and fall garden. 70 days. 60 seeds.
The Open Source Seed Initiative exists so that breeders who originate new varieties can protect them from exploitation and patenting by corporations. It means that the breeder has freely given up her patent rights in order to keep the variety in the public domain forever. The OSSI pledge reads: "You have the freedom to use these OSSI-pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others' use of these seeds or their derivatives, by patents or other means, and to include this pledge in any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives."
