We are so pleased to bring you this high-quality open-pollinated broccoli. Solstice is tender, sweet, and early--ready by the summer solstice from a late March sowing. Outstanding as a fall broccollik with the long necks holding it up away from slugs and mud.It is generally 2 weeks earlier than main-crop broccoli. The heads are held up clear of the foliage, making them easy to pick and safer from slugs and other pests. Many side shoots after main head is cut. Farmer Jonathan Spero bred Solstice and has pledged it to the Open Source Seed Initiative so it cannot be patented. He grew our seed at Lupine Knoll Farm. 60 seeds.
Very few open-pollinated varieties of broccoli are available and even fewer of good quality. Much broccoli seed in the US is grown using Cytoplasmic Male Sterility to produce hybrid varieties. The process is considered genetic engineering in most other countries. Solstice is produced by traditional open pollination, assisted by insects such as honeybees, not hybrid, not CMS.
